By contrast, the professor hold the view that the recent study shows that with a small amount of mercury, human body will not be harmed. However, the lecture clearly indicates that most of dentists have a separator in their offices, a kind of filter which can collect solid materials and prevent water with mercury from flowing into sewer systems to pollute body of water.

Finally, the reading material insist that There are substitutes of Amalgam, such as gold and ceramic. On the contrary, the professor refute with some details. The reading and the listening have a debate on whether amalgam should be used as a dental filling. While the reading claims that it should not be allowed, the listening refutes all three reasons mentioned in the reading.

First, the reading claims that amalgam may cause health problems. However, the listening argues that few people will absorb mercury fillings, so it will not be a problem. Also, only those who are allergic to mercury will suffer health problems.

Second, the reading believes amalgam will also lead to environmental pollution. However, according to the lecture, separators can be used to avoid such problems. When water that contains mercury passes through the separator, it can be filtered, so the mercury will not end up polluting the environment.

Finally, the reading suggests that alternative materials can be used to replace amalgam. However, the speakers dispels this suggestion by pointing out the fact that mercury can remain stable in wet environment like our mouths. Although gold, the suggested alternative, can remain stable in similar situations, it is too expensive. Using gold will drive the medication fee in America to a much higher level.
