冲突

Three years later events were set in motion thatwould cause the town to regret sending Jose awayand set the fanatics by the ears.

三年后,接二连三的事情开始发生,这使镇里的人后悔赶走了乔斯,使狂热者们吵了起来。

A gang of criminals began to set fire to houses, buildings, and cars whenever they could.

一个犯罪团伙开始一有机会就点燃房屋、大楼和汽车。

When the police set their minds on capturing this gang, the gang robbed their homes, beat uptheir children, and kidnapped their wives!

警察决心要抓住他们,这伙犯罪分子就抢劫他们的钱财、毒打他们的孩子、拐骗他们的妻子!

It set a record for most violent crimes in the state! It served them right, Jose's parentsthought.

这使全国最暴力的犯罪创了纪录!他们这是罪有应得,乔斯的父母想。

They had long since set aside the belief that Jose was from the devil. After his departure theyhad seen that the fanatics served two masters their God and their money!

他们早就不相信乔斯是魔鬼变的。他走之后,他们发现狂热者们原来侍奉二主:一是上帝,二是金钱!

They thought that no Godly people would set foot in a town with a known psychic! And so theyhad protected their own interests by getting rid of Jose.

When Jose's parents had set down their positions in the leadership of the group (given to themafter Jose left),

they had felt set free from hate! Then they set about convincing others that the fanatics werejust that, fanatics!

他们觉得已经摆脱了仇恨!接着他们就开始说服别人,狂热者不过是些狂热者!

The gang had arrived, unfortunately, before enough people could be convinced! Asked if heknew where Jose was and if Jose would come back to help,

Jose’s dad just set his jaw and reminded them that he had served asa member of their groupsince the day Jose had set forth-there was no way that Jose had talked to him in that time!

例句:This evening I will set forth policies to advance that ideal at home and around the world.

4.set free 释放,使自由;放弃,脱开

例句:Breathing it, Robert felt as if he was set free from a cage.

呼吸着空气,罗伯特感觉自己像是被人从牢笼释放出来一般。

5.set one's heart/mind on sth. /on doing sth. —心想得到某物(做某事),决心得到某物(做某事)

例句:But he really had his heart set on one of them, which is not far from his father's home.

但他一心想得到那个离他爸爸家不远的那个地方。

6.set sth. in motion 使某物开始运转(工作)

例句:If God created the world, and set nature into motion, and in what way is God responsibleor irresponsible.
