the only thing necessary在此necessary形容词充当后置定语，修饰限定the only thing;some urgent things则是urgent形容词充当前置定语，同样起到修饰限定的作用。也就是说形容词充当定语既可以前置又可以后置。triumph表示“胜利”，形容词形式triumphant，triumphant return就表示“凯旋”。evil既可以充当名词表示“罪恶，邪恶”又可以充当形容词表示“罪恶的，邪恶的”。

struggle to do表示“努力做某事”;hold back“抑制，阻止”;Stagnation in home sales is holding back economic recovery. 住房销售的停滞正阻碍着经济的复苏。tidal“潮汐的”，a tidal wave of crime就是“犯罪的浪潮”。go wrong with“出毛病”，也可以说“have something wrong with”。Some people may think that those who don’t agree with them have something wrong with them.有些人可能认为那些和自己观点不一致的人有点儿不正常。ingredient“要素”;accountability“责任”，形容词形式accountable，常见搭配be accountalbe to“对...负责任”。

Accountability isn’t hard to define. It means that every person is responsible for his or her actions and liable for their consequences.

be responsible for对...负责任;and连接两个并列分句;be liable for=be responsible for;their consequences指的是“行为所导致的后果”。

Of the many values that hold civilization together -- honesty, kindness, and so on -- accountability may be the most important of all. Without it, there can be no respect, no trust, no law -- and, ultimately, no society.

hold...together“结合”;civilization“文明”;kindness=kind+ness，其中，kind为形容词，-ness表示名词的后缀。因此，kindness就是名词“善良”。
