根据韦氏大词典的解释， dotard一词起源于14世纪，意思是：a person in his or her dotage，差不多就是“老糊涂”的意思，但这还算什么，更让人拍案叫绝的是，有网友发现dotard可拆成Donald和retard，也就是特朗普的名字“唐纳德”(Donald Trump)和“智障”(retard)这两个词。这么高水准的双关语，如此高的文学修养，顿时让美国网友们佩服地五体投地。

⑴Dotage ['dotɪdʒ]

上面已经说过韦氏词典对dotard一词的解释是：a person in his or her dotage，但是美国网友又皱起眉头啦，那啥是dotage啊?韦氏词典又不得不进一步向大家解释什么是dotage，解释是：a state or period of senile decay marked by decline of mental poise and alertness，即“因精神状况和警觉性下滑所引发的老年衰弱状态”，用闽南话说就是“老番癫”，就是指一个人年纪大了，头脑有点痴呆，常做错事。Get到真相的美国网友笑喷了，纷纷表示dotard这个词用得太精确!用来形容特朗普再合适不过!

①As my grandmother got into her dotage, she started to forget small things like her dog’s name and her address.

我奶奶年老昏聩，连狗的名字还有她家住哪这些事情都不记得了。

②Since Mary has entered her dotage, she often says things that do not make sense to anyone but her.

玛丽已经步入老年，经常说一些别人不知所云的话。

③My grandfather’s license was revoked when he was in his dotage because he was determined to be an unsafe driver.

我爷爷的驾照被吊销了，因为他年纪太大了，开车容易出问题。

⑵Buffer ['bʌfɚ]

Buffer这个词大家应该不陌生，最常见的意思是“缓冲器”，但是它作名词使用时还有一个鲜为人知的意思。

根据剑桥英文词典的解释，buffer的意思是“a silly old man”，可以翻译成“老糊涂;蠢老头”，主要用在英式英语中。

①You silly old buffer!

你这个蠢老头!

⑶Old codger ['kɑdʒɚ]

Codger这个词不会单独拿出来用，总是和old连在一起构成old codger.

提前警告你，这个词可不要乱用!不要乱用!不要乱用!重要的话说三遍!不然会被打得很惨。

Longman英文词典对old codger的意思是“an offensive word for an old man”。

这是个对老年人极具冒犯意味的词，他们听到耳朵里就像我们中国人说“老不死的”一样，所以，如果你想找事情的话，请尽管用，腿没被打断算我输。

⑷Crock [krɑk]

Crock这个词的本意是“瓦罐;坛子”，crock能有“老人”的意思大概也是从这里衍生出来的把。

根据柯林斯英文词典的解释：If you describe someone as an old crock, you mean that they are old and weak.

这个词主要用在英式英语中，大致可以翻译为“老朽的人;老家伙”。

①But you won't want some old crock like me.

但是我想你不会要我这样的老家伙。

⑸Gaga

有个欧美女星叫Lady Gaga，我不知道她为什么她起了这么个艺名。

Gaga作为形容词有两个意思。

第一层意思：unable to think clearly and make decisions because of old age;senile.

即“因为上了年纪脑袋不好使”。这里的senile就包含“老态龙钟;年老无力;老糊涂的”的意思。

①I know I'm seventy-three but I haven't gone gaga yet.

我知道自己73岁了，但我还没有变成老糊涂!

第二层意思：If someone goes gaga over a person or thing, they like them very much.

例如：She's totally gaga about/over him.

她对他的喜爱简直到了疯狂的程度。

⑹Geriatric ['dʒɛrɪ'ætrɪk]

从这个词可以延伸出很多和老年人有关的词汇，比如geriatrician [,dʒɛrɪə'trɪʃən](老年病科医生)，gerontology[,dʒɛrən'tɑlədʒi](老年医学)，gerontologist(研究老年病学的专家)等等。

Geriatric作为形容词意思是relating to old age, or to the process of getting older.

但作名词时意思则是“老头子;老家伙”(可能具有冒犯意味)。

例如：He will complain about having to spend time with such a boring bunch of geriatrics.

跟这么一群无聊的老头呆在一起，他会满腹牢骚的。

⑺Long in the tooth

这个表达的来源和马有关，因为据说看马的牙齿的就能知道这匹马的年龄。所以long in the tooth就可以用来描述一个人年纪大或者物件老旧。

①I'm a bit long in the tooth to be looking for a girlfriend.

我这个年纪找女朋友有点太老了。

②The desktop was getting long in the tooth.

这个台式机是越来越老旧了。

⑻Sexagenarian [,sɛksədʒə'nɛrɪən]

Sexagenarian这个词是专指60到69岁之间的人，此外还有septuagenarian[,sɛptʃuədʒə'nɛrɪən](年龄在70到79岁之间的人)，octogenarian ['ɑktədʒə'nɛrɪən](年龄在80到89岁之间的人)，nonagenarian[,nɑnədʒə'nɛrɪən](年龄在90到99岁之间的人)，centenarian [,sɛntɪ'nɛrɪən](年龄是100岁及以上之间的人)。

显然这些都是表示数字的拉丁或希腊词根加上genarian构成的。

⑼Superannuated [,sju:pər'ænjueitid]

英文词典对这个词的解释是old and no longer useful or no longer able to do things，即老了不中用了，或者太旧不能用了，过时了。

①The information on this website was superannuated and needed updating.

这个网站上的信息已经过时了，需要更新。

②After reading the effective date, I realized my headache medicine wassuperannuated.

看过药品生产日期后我才意识到我的头痛药已经过期了。

③A superannuated sportsman.

一个上了年纪无法继续竞技的运动员。
