2 Is there a “success personality” —

3 some winning combination of qualities

4 that leads almost inevitably to achievement?

5 If so, exactly what is that secret success formula,

7 At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success,

8 probing the attitudes of 1500 prominent people selected at random

9 from Who’s Who in America.

10 Our research finds out a number of qualities

11 that occur regularly among top achievers.

13 that is common sense.

14 Common sense is the most prevailing quality

15 possessed by our respondents.

16 Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality.

17 And 61 percent say that common sense was very important

18 in contributing to their success.

19 To most, common sense means the ability to present sound,

20 practical judgments on everyday affairs.

21 To do this, one has to sweep aside extra ideas

22 and get right to the core of what matters.

27 Is common sense a quality a person is born with,

29 The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed.

31 Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others,

32 learning from their — and your own — mistakes.

33 Besides common sense,

34 there are many other factors that influence success:

35 knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence,

36 the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity,

37 relationships with others, and of course, luck.

38 But common sense stands out.

39 If you develop these qualities, you’ll succeed.

40 And you might even find yourself listed in Who’s Who someday.
