Smorgasbord : noun, a collection containing a variety of things

①The dessert table included a smorgasbord of sweets, but it was hard to choose among the assortment.

甜点表上列出了各种各样的的甜点，但是种类实在太多了，很难选。

②The art festival displayed a smorgasbord of paintings and sculptures from various artists.

艺术节上展示了来自不同艺术家的各种绘画和雕塑作品。

③The magazine features a smorgasbord of stories on a wide variety of subjects.

这本杂志特点就是涉及的话题很广泛，里面有很多与这些话题相关的故事。

注解：瑞典语中有个词叫smörgåsbord，这是一种斯堪的纳维亚风格的自助餐，餐桌上摆满了各种各样热菜和冷盘供客人选择。所以设身处地不难想象客人面对这么多的食物一定是手忙脚乱，不知道吃什么才好。因此，你可以用a smorgasbord of来表达“大量;许多;各种各样;琳琅满目;种类多”这样的含义。是不是比用a lot/many这样的词高大上了许多?用出去自然很吸引眼球。

那么除了用a smorgasbord of，还有没有其他的词汇来表达“多”的含义呢?太多了!

下面将列举几个可以表达“多”的单词或短语并给出我们精心挑选的例句，这些例句大多比较贴近我们多数人的表达习惯和生活情境，没什么难以理解的地方，因此当自己实际运用这些表达的时候就没太多的阻碍。

⑴Oodles ['udlz]

我们可以用oodles of something这个短语表达“大量;很多”的意思，英文解释是a large amount of something.

①She has got oodles of money/cash.

她赚了好多钱。

②The recipe calls for oodles of melted chocolate.

做这道点心需要很多融化的巧克力。

⑵Myriad ['miriəd]

Myriad既可以作为形容词单独使用，也可以做名词在a myriad of或myriads of这样的短语中使用，意思是a very large number of something.

①They offered no solution for our myriad problems.

对于我们遇到的众多问题他们没给出解决办法。

②Parents face a myriad of problems bringing up children.

父母抚养孩子过程中遇到会遇到很多麻烦。

⑶Umpteen [,ʌmp'tin]

Umpteen是个限定词(determiner)，意思是very many; indefinitely numerous.

尤其是因为某件事发生已经发生无数次了，让你感到有些不快，因此使用的时候要稍稍注意一下你想表达的话是不是这个情感在里面。但是语言是很活的东西，有时候不必受这些条条框框的束缚。

Umpteenth是在umpteen后加上-th后缀变形得到的，意思是“第无数次”。

①I have taken the test umpteen times and still haven't made a passing score.

这个考试我已经参加无数次了，但目前一次都没通过。

②She checked her watch for the umpteenth time.

她已经不知道是第多少次看表了。

⑷Welter ['wɛltɚ]

Welter有“混乱”(state of confusion)的含义，例如这个句子：The classroom was in a welter when the teacher did not show up for class.

老师没来上课，教室里一片混乱。

所以a welter of something这个短语的意思就是a large and confusing amount or number of something，有“多而且混乱”的含义在里面。

①There is such a welter of conflicting rules.

规矩繁多而且自相矛盾。

②The plan was dropped amid a welter of criticism.

在一片批评声中，计划被取消了。

⑸Plethora ['plɛθərə]

Plethora这个词经常出现在a plethora of这个短语中，意思是a very large number of something, usually more than you need.

这个表达虽然也有“大量;许多”的含义，但是要注意的是这个表达通常带有“过量、超过需求”的含义。

①I don't see why my mother wants more shoes when she already has a plethora of them.

我不明白为什么我妈已经有了那么多鞋了还要买。

②There's a plethora of books about how to succeed.

关于如何成功的书非常非常多。

⑹Cascade [kæ'sked]

Cascade这个词主要是用在文学作品中。先来看看它的动词用法，这样有助于学习它的名词表达。

作动词时，cascade的意思是to flow or hang down in large amounts.

一般是指物体像水流一样倾泻而下，主语一般是像瀑布、眼泪、头发这样的词。

比如: The tears cascaded down her cheeks.

眼泪像断了线的珠子，不住地顺着脸颊流淌。

名词的cascade经常用在a cascade of something这个短语中，意思也是a large amount of something,但是从它的动词用法我们可以看出这个短语有“接连;不断涌现”的含义，就像水流一样绵绵不绝，这一点要仔细体会。

①She realized being rich came with a cascade of troubles that included greedy relatives.

她意识到人一旦有钱后，麻烦就会接连不断地找上门，比如贪婪的亲戚。

②When Jim told one lie, he had no idea it would trigger a cascade of additional lies.

吉姆当初撒谎的时候怎么也不会想到，一句谎言需要更多的谎言来圆谎。

⑺Legion ['li:dʒən]

我们也可以用a legion of和...be legion这两个短语表达“大量”的意思。前者中的legion是名词，而后者是形容词。

①The sky is studded with a legion of stars.

夜空布满了繁星。

②The number of teenagers who dropped out of school is legion.

未完成学业就辍学的青少年比比皆是。

⑻Inordinate [ɪn'ɔrdɪnət]

这是个形容词，意思是much more than usual or expected.

Inordinate也可以表示数量多，但是从英文解释可以看出这个“多”是远远超出你的“多”。

①Every year I spend an inordinate amount of time selecting Christmas presents for my large family.

我家里人很多，所以每年为家人挑选圣诞礼物的时候就要花大把大把的时间。

②They have an inordinate number of pets.

他们家养的宠物数量之多远远超乎想象。

⑼Manifold ['mænɪfold]

英语词典上对manifold的解释是：Things that are manifold are of many different kinds.

所以我们可以用manifold来表达“各种各样”的意思，比如各种各样的困难/错误/问题/缺点/好处、各种各样的语言、各种各样的活动等等。

①The benefits of learning new words are manifold.

拓展词汇的好处是多种多样的。

②While Jane is involved in manifold activities, she always makes time to complete her homework.

虽然简经常参加各种各样的活动，但是这并不妨碍她按时完成作业。

③The difficulties we are facing are manifold.

我们面对的困难是多种多样的。

⑽A host of

Host最为常见的意思可能就是“举办”，但是一旦出现在a host of这个短语中就完全不能按字面意思理解了。

A host of的意思是a large number of something，如果觉得仅仅一个a host of表达不了你心目中的那个“多”的强度，可以在host前面加个whole强调一下数量真的非常非常多。

①There's a whole host of reasons why he didn't get the job.

有太多的原因可以解释为什么他得不到这份工作。

②A host of memories rushed into her mind.

大量的回忆涌入她的脑海。

⑾All manner of

Manner这个词最常见的意思可能就是“举止”了，但是如果你没有学习过all manner of的用法，估计很难从字面上看出它的意思。

All manner of sth的意思也是a lot of different types.

①The market has all manner of interesting things for sale.

市场上有各种各样有趣的东西出售。

②We would discuss all manner of subjects.

我们会讨论各种各样的话题。

⑿Gazillion/zillion

你也可以用a gazillion/zillion或者gazillions/zillions of sth来表示an extremely large number.

①I've seen that movie a zillion times.

那部电影我已经看过N遍了。

②I have a gazillion/zillion(gazillions of/zillions of) things to do.

我有数不清的事情要做。

③It's been a zillion years since I've seen her.

我已经很多年没见过她了。

⒀A raft of

Raft的本意是“木筏;救生筏”，但是a raft of的意思和raft的意思相差甚远。当然，既然出现在这篇文章中，掰脚趾头想都知道它的意思和“多”有关。

没错，a raft of的意思也是a large number of things.

①The company has launched a whole raft of new software products.

该公司发布了很多新的软件产品。

②We have designed a whole raft of measures to improve the transport system.

我们已经制定了一整套措施来完善交通系统。

⒁Teem [tiːm]

你可以用teem down这个短语表示to rain very heavily.

例如：It's been teeming down all day.

一整天都在下雨。

也可以用teem with sth，例如：It's teeming with rain.

但是teem with sth这个短语也可以用来表示某个地点人或动物很多。

①The island was teeming with tourists.

岛上游客很多。

②Emergency personnel teem at the scene of the accident.

事故现场有很多急救人员。

说到teem就不得不说一下torrent、deluge、avalanche、blizzard这几个词。

Torrent有“急流”的意思，deluge是“暴雨”，avalanche是“雪崩”，blizzard是“暴风雪”。但是它们都可以用来表示数量之多。

①He let out a torrent of abuse.

他破口大骂。

②This has brought a deluge of criticism.

这一下子招来了铺天盖地的批评声。

③We were swamped by an avalanche of letters/phone calls/complaints.

雪片般的来信/潮水般涌进的电话/纷至沓来的投诉使我们应接不暇。

④Retailers were hit with a blizzard of new products and brands in all shapes, sizes and colours.

各种形色不一、大小各异的新产品和新品牌铺天盖地,让零售商们疲于应付。

⒂Galore [ɡə'lɔr]

Galore这个词我已经在经济学人Espresso | Patriotism with popcorn: Chinese film 这篇文章中详细地说过了，可能这个词的用法是这十几个跟“多”有关的表达中最特殊的，因为这个形容词是后置形容词，只能发在名词后面而绝对不能放在名词前面，所以如果你能在写作中用到这个词，绝对会给文章添色不少。

①Since your hotel is surrounded by restaurants galore, you should have no problem finding a decent meal.

你住的酒店周围有很多餐馆，所以要吃一顿像样的饭应该很容易。

②You will find bargains galore in the store.

在这家店有很多便宜货。

③My summer vacation is filled with happy hours galore.

我的这个暑假过得很开心。
